CHINESE MEDICINE VS WESTERN
There are two ways of looking at health.
In the West, we view the body as a machine: The heart is a pump... the bladder and
kidney's are plumbing... the brain is a computer... our joints are hinges that become
rusty with age... and so on.
Western doctors are trained to repair our "machines," so their thinking is
mostly reactive. They wait for a problem to occur, then try to cure it. Thus, disease is
considered an attacking entity, which must be destroyed. Either a powerful antibiotic
eliminates the germ -- or if a tumor, it's surgically removed.
Unfortunately, this puts less emphasis on general good health. Instead, we look for
some breakthrough cure for every problem -- a "magic" pill or procedure that
will repair the body, and restore it to working order.
In contrast, Traditional Chinese Medicine looks at sickness from another perspective:
Why was a person's immune system so weak as to succumb to the bacteria, virus or other
intruder in the first place?
That brings us to traditional herbal medicines, the foundation of Chinese healing and
healthcare for thousands of years. This accummulation of knowledge is unequaled anywhere
in the world. No other country even comes close.
Western medicine, in comparison, merely gives us chemical antibiotics to kill the
out-of-control germs. But then what? A Chinese healer would ask: What are we doing to
prevent a reoccurrence -- especially if antibiotics are losing their punch through
over-use?
For example, the earliest western drug therapy was Jenner's discovery of the smallpox
inoculation in 1796. (Using the common foxglove's dried leaves, digitalis, which contains
important glycosides. It's also a powerful cardiac stimulant.)
But did you know that smallpox inoculation was widely used in China more than 200 years
before Jenner's discovery? It has even been documented that doctors were sent from Turkey
and Czarist Russia in the late-1600s to learn smallpox inoculation from the Chinese.
Mark Taylor writes in his excellent book, "Chinese Patent Medicines"...
"To underscore the differences between Traditional Chinese Medicine and western
medicine, we should look at the differences in treatment between the two systems.
Gastrointestinal (stomach, digestive and intestinal) problems represent the largest block
of complaints from Americans. Yet western medicine offers only three methods of treatment
other than surgery. There are anti-ulcer drugs (Tagamet, Zantac), over-the-counter
remedies to neutralize stomach acid (Rolaids, Tums, Maalox), and drugs that produce more
mucus (Cytotex). These products work by either blocking the production of stomach acid, or
by producing more mucus in the GI tract to create a barrier. But this only masks the
irritation and pain of hydrochloric acid on the stomach lining.
"In contrast, Chinese medicine offers dozens of herbal formulas to enhance the
digestive system's normal function. Instead of blocking symptoms, it concentrates on the
root cause so that the symptoms will not reappear. In fact, there are dozens and dozens of
separate and distinct formulas that affect various aspects of digestive functions. There
is even an entire school of Chinese medical thought linking disease to the malfunctioning
of digestion!"
Chinese herbal medicine also avoids many of the nasty side-effects produced by Western
pharmaceuticals, especially the so-called sledge-hammer drugs. Herb formulas are gentle
and offer a slow but steady rate of improvement. For example:
 | Herbal treatment of the common cold is vastly superior to the over-the-counter remedies
in drugstores. Chinese medicine recognizes several types of colds, and has developed
treatments for each condition and its complications. |
 | With women's menstrual and menopausal complications, there are few Western-type
treatments, except hormone replacement therapy -- with its nightmare side-effects -- and
medications like aspirin and Darvon that relieve painful cramping. In contrast, Chinese
herbal medicine offers formulas to build blood, regulate the menstrual cycle, increase
fertility and stop hot flashes. |
 | Chinese herbal medicine strengthens our natural energy, which wanes as we grow older.
There are remarkable formulas to rebuild this energy, and strengthen the kidney energy
lost in the aging process. |
 | Do you see? For every physical problem, the Chinese have natural solutions. |

POTATO - MAGIC : A TREASUREHOUSE OF BENEFITS
Dr. Priya Kaushal The potato an annual plant producing swollen underground stem
tubers. There are the most popular and widely used vegetable in the world. The potato is a
native of Southern America. This vegetable forms an indispensable item of daily food and
is an important source of nutrition. At present, the potato is widely cultivated in India.
It grows on a vine in the form of an underground root. Potatoes from Mahabaleshwar in
Maharashtra are of excellent quality.
Food Value
The potato contains high nutritive value and it increases
virtility. Its chief food principle is starch also has some amount of protein of high
biological value. As the potato is alkaline, it is very helpful in maintaining the alkali
reserves of the body and preventing acidosis. Besides containing a substantial amount of
alkaline salts, it is rich in soda, potash and vitamins A and B. The most important
contribution of the potato is its vitamin C content. Scurvy in Europe has
become uncommon with the increased use of the potato.
To secure its maximum value, it should always be cooked with its skin as the most
nutritive part of the potato lies just below the skin and this layer in particular is very
rich in protein and mineral salts. As the potato can be boiled, baked, steamed and cooked
with other vegetables, its nutrients are easily digestible and are completely absorbed in
the body within two and a half hours of eating it. Potatoes should be cut only when they
are to be served otherwise they loose much of their vitamin C.
Potato Juice
One can use a juicer or crush or pound potatoes and then extract
the juice through a cloth. That portion of the potato with green discolouration should be
cut and discarded because it contains a toxic substance called Solanine.
Besides, if a potato is found sprouted, the sprouted portion should be cut and discarded
before its use.

Natural Benefits and Curitive Properties
The potato prevents the fermentative process in the intestine
and helps the growth of friendly bacteria in the digestive tract. It contains several
medicinal virtues. As it is one of the most strongly alkaline of all foods, it is
therefore helpful in maintaining the alkali reserve of the body and is a natural antidote
for an overdose of acid or acidosis. It also dissolves uric acid. An exclusive potato diet
is considered valuable in the treatment of chronic constipation, intestinal toxaemia, uric
acid diseases, renal calculi, stone and dropsy.
Scurvy
Dr. G. F. Stil used "potato cream" in curing cases of
infantile scurvy. Potato is regarded as an excellent food remedy in scurvy.
Rheumatism
Taking one or two teaspoons of the juice of raw potato before
meals act as an eliminating factor for all acids and relieves rheumatism. The skin of the
potato which is exceptionally rich in vital mineral salts and the water in which the
peelings have been boiled are some of the best medicines for the ailments caused by excess
acid in the system. A decoction should be prepared and strained and glassful taken 3/4
times daily.
Digestive System Disorders
Raw potato juice is valuable as it relieves from gastritis. The
recommended dose is half a cup, two or three times, half-an-hour before meals. As the
potato contains soda and potash, it helps in preventing acidosis and maintains the alkali
reservoir of the body. It gives relief from gastric and duodenal ulcers. Potato starch is
administered as an anti-inflammatory for gastrointestinal diseases and toxins.
Skin Disorders
Raw potato juice has proved valuable in clearing skin blemishes.
The cleansing results from a high content of potassium, sulphur, phosphorus and chlorine
in the potato. A point to be noted is that these elements are of value only in raw potato
as they are composed of live organic atoms. But in a cooked state, they are converted into
inorganic atoms and are of little value for constructive purposes.
Amazingly, the juicy pulp of potato helps in melting wrinkles, banishing age spots and
clearing the skin. The enzymes in raw potato pulp, combine with vitamin C and natural
starch and help create a skin food that nourishes the starved cellular tissues of the
skin. To add to the wonders, the alkaline juices promote an antiseptic action that
provides a glowing look of youth. Decaying skin sloughs off with the acid portion of the
pulp. It has also given encouraging results in skin diseases specially in eczema.
Swellings
Raw potato juice, if externally applied, is valuable in the
treatment of swelling and a disordered condition of the joints and muscles. The juice,
after being extracted, should be boiled down to one fifth and a few drops of glycerine
should be added as a preservative. It is used as a liniment and applied after fomentation
of the affected parts.
Potatoes should be avoided by obese people as they are fattening and completely omitted
from the diet of those suffering from venereal diseases and those afflicted with
aphrodisiac tendencies. The potato contains an alkaloid toxin Solanine which
affects nerves controlling the sexual organs.
Solanine poison is present in green coloured potatoes. The combination of cooked meat and
potatoes intensifies the solanine poison and together with the presence of uric acid
crystals resulting from the ingestion of meat may cause excessive irritation of sexual
organs.

Native to South America, the potato was transported to Europe in the mid 1500's by Spanish
sailors. Not until the fifteen hundreds, however, did this food become a staple in Europe,
and it quickly gained popularity in many other cultures as well because of its nutritional
benefits. As as a member of the nightshade family - which also includes Egg Plant and
Tomatoes - potatoes contain very small quantities atropine. This substance to is deadly in
large amounts, in small doses it has antispasmodic affects, making potatoes useful for
easing gastrointestinal pain and cramping. Potatoes can also be applied externally for
muscle pain and skin problems. The more than an 100 potato varieties come in any sizes,

- COLIC
- Babies who have colic usually have gas. By rubbing the feet or a reflexology method on
the feet can usually help this problem.
- If this is not effective or unavailable try this method: with the baby lying in front of
you, begin by starting at the bottom of the rib cage and gently rubbing down the abdomen
one hand after the other for about 6-8 strokes. Then slowly bring the knees in toward the
chest and down again 3-4 times successive movements. Then starting at the lower left
abdomen, make a semi-circle by following the lower border of the ribs from left to right
and down to the lower right abdomen. This movement will look like a half moon stroke when
completed.
- Sometimes changes in diet, suppositories or warm baths will help. Occasionally a milk
intolerance or a food allergy may be the culprit. Experiment a little with diet and note
any changes. If the condition stays the same for two weeks, certainly see your
pediatrician.
- COLITIS
- Try: slippery elm, ginger, peppermint, psyillium husks, cayenne, chamomile, papaya or
comfrey. Drink: aloe vera juice (see Alesol)
or cabbage and carrot juice. Eating fresh raw foods can be helpful for this condition.
- COLON
- Carrot and spinach juice has been used for the colon.
- Oxalic acid is very high in leafy green vegetables; spinach, mustard greens, Swiss
chard, beet greens, turnip greens, kale, collards and broad-leafed sorrel. This acid is
the ingredient that keeps the function of the colon healthy. This means proper beating
function. It is important that this oxalic acid be consumed raw (organic), as when it is
cooked (inorganic), it forms an interlocking compound with the calcium (even the calcium
in other foods eaten at the same meal), destroying the nourishing value of both. This
results in such a serious deficiency of calcium that it has been known to cause
decomposition of the bones. Also, minerals frequently cannot be utilized if they become
inorganic through cooking, etc. For example, iron in raw spinach may be utilized one
hundred percent whereas only one-fifth of the iron in cooked spinach can be utilized by
the body.
- COLON CLEANSE
- Try: red clover, psyillium husks, ginger root, chlorophyll, slippery elm, aloe vera
juice (see Alesol),
rhubarb root, Irish moss, garlic, golden seal, cayenne, fresh fruits (especially apples,
figs, grapes, prunes), and/or acidophilus. Eat plenty of fresh raw fruits and vegetables
and high fiber foods. Drink vegetables juices, especially the green juice mixed with other
vegetables (this is explained in detail in the "Living Food
Lifestyle"). Eliminate animal protein, pasteurized dairy products and foods
with white flour.
- CONGESTION
- Try: Chili Peppers.
- CONJUNCTIVITIS
- Drink fresh parsley juice for conjunctivitis.
- CONSTIPATION
- Try: Km (contains 14 herbs)....send us an E-Mail
for further info....New Products.
- CUTS AND SCRAPS
- Try: All
Purpose Gel.

D

- DANDRUFF
- Try: burdock, kelp, sage, nettle, bayberry, chamomile and/or yucca. Rub jojoba oil into
the scalp for dandruff and use natural pure hair care products.
- DENTAL CARE
- After taking chewable vitamin C, be certain to brush the teeth as the chewable vitamin C
contains enough acid to erode the enamel on the teeth.
- DEPRESSION
- Try: Km E-Mail for further info....New
Product.
- Try: kelp, spirulina Bee Pollen
Page, ginger and/or black cohosh. Regular exercise can be helpful for depression.
- DERMATITIS
- Use carrot juice with some spinach or other fresh greens for dermatitis.
- DIABETES
- Diabetics have been known to gradually get off insulin by taking two trace minerals:
chromium and vanadium.
- Also try: Magnetol and Biomune for this condition....send us an E-Mail for further info....New Products.
- DIAPER RASH
- Try: All
Purpose Gel.
- DIARRHEA
- Try: red raspberry leaves, comfrey, slippery elm bark, psyllium husks, kelp, ginger,
cayenne, chamomile and bananas.
- DIGESTIVE AID
- As a digestive aid, mix a handful of spinach and six carrots. Try adding aloe vera juice
(see Alesol)
to your daily diet for indigestion. For proper digestion, it is very important to practice
the principles of proper Food Combining (see "Living Food
Lifestyle" for details on this subject).
- DIURETIC
- Use asparagus as diuretic. Cucumber is probably the most natural diuretic known. It is
the vegetable equivalent of watermelon.
- Try: garlic, dandelion root, kelp, alfalfa, parsley, watermelon, watermelon seed tea (a
recipe and instructions are contained "Living Food
Lifestyle"), lemon juice, reduce the intake of salt and eliminate coffee. Use
only sea salt. Additionally, fresh raw foods are helpful to eliminate excessive floods
from the body. The water in vegetables is about as pure as you can get.
- DROPSY
- Try drinking parsley juice for dropsy.
- INDEX

E

- EAR ACHE
- Try: Oxybuild,
black cohosh root, chickweed, golden seal, lobelia, Bringham tea, put a little warm garlic
or olive oil in the ear.

parsnip juice is very helpful.
- ENERGY AND ENDURANCE
- Try: licroice root, Siberian ginseng, dandelion, peppermint leaves, ginger root, garlic,
parsley, gentian root, red clover blossoms, kelp, Bee Pollen,
damiana, spirulina, pumpkin and sesame seeds. It is also necessary to have a proper
exercise program and diet containing fresh raw fruits and vegetables.

Foot Reflexology
by Glynda Chambliss
What is this strange phenomenon? Reflexes in the feet to every organ,
gland and body part? It seems pretty far out to some yet years of proven effectiveness
show its true value.
It's not foot massage, which focuses on the muscles and ligaments. Instead, it works on
similar principles to acupuncture. The wonder of it is in using the thumb and fingers to
seek out the sore spots on your foot caused by congestion in the corresponding organ or
gland instead of needles.
HISTORY
Over 1,000 years ago, reflex-zone work was practiced in India but for
unknown reasons, the art was lost. (My personal belief is smelly feet, but no one really
knows.)
For whatever reason, it wasn't taken seriously in the U.S. until Dr. William H. Fitzgerald
wrote the book, Zone Therapy or Relieving Pain at Home in 1917. Several years later Dr.
Joseph Shelby Riley recognized the possibilities and some of his staff began
experimenting.
One therapist on his staff, Eunice Ingram, began developing her foot reflexology theory in
the 1930's. Searching out tender spots & creating a map to the body on the feet. She
found the fingers and thumbs to be the most Basically, he had no sore spots till she got
to the Pituitary reflex effective even though Dr. Fitzgerald had used rubber bands and
clips.
She started seeing results from her labors, even relieving symptoms of asthma and hay
fever in her nephew Dwight C. Byers who continues her teaching methods today.
How It Works

When a weakness appears in our body, blood and nerve function slow allowing
crystalline deposits of acids and or calcium to form, especially in the extremities (like
hands and feet). This, in turn, slows organ or gland performance even more.
The pain experienced in this treatment is in direct proportion to the quantity and size of
the crystals. Some also seem to be sharper than others. Some, like corns, seem to be
almost like burrs with little hooks.
A client sometimes swears it's not a thumb rubbing that spot but a viciously applied
fingernail. Often, in a treatment it is necessary to use a knuckle to prove the pain has
an internal rather than external source. Of course, when the spot is found, pressure is
eased up and the area gently worked.
Breaking up these crystals enables normal circulation to be restored to both the nerves
and blood supply of the affected areas. When they are broken up, your body begins
eliminating stored toxins that it was unable to do previously. This may bring on symptoms
of runny nose or light diarrhea. If so, it won't be for a long period of time and, the
sooner started, the sooner you'll feel better.
The Zone Theory
Foot & Hand Reflexology works on the "Zone Theory" which
works on the principle that there are 10 zones in the body. The reflexes in the foot
travel through these zones the way electricity travels through wiring in a house.
There are 10 zones down the body corresponding to the fingers and toes. Imagine dividing
the body into 10 equal sections with each toe being the center line. You would then see
the zones.
So, when you work the middle section, you'll be working reflexively with every organ and
gland layered in that zone.
I say layered because that's exactly what it is--just as your organs and glands are
layered one on top of the other. For instance, behind ribs you will find lungs, heart,
esophagus and many muscles, ligaments, nerves, arteries and veins. Get the picture? We are
exceedingly complex beings.
So, whatever reflex you work on the foot or hand, it will also stimulate every other organ
and gland in that zone. For instance, if you work the zone 1 for the bladder, you would
also be indirectly stimulating the reproductive organs, all the way up to lungs, esophagus
and into the brain itself.
See the chart on the front of this brochure for a basic understanding of where reflexes
can be found on the foot. Find a reflexology partner and rub those areas that are sore or,
better yet, see a certified reflexologist for a complete session including
"desserts."
"Desserts" are the loosening and relaxing techniques used to ease tension in the
foot and the body. Briskly rubbing the foot between both hands and placing a fist to.
Experiences
I enjoyed the following experience by Eunice Ingram related in her book
Stories The Feet Can Tell through Reflexology and Stories The Feet Have Told through
Reflexology:
A man come into her office with his wife and was doubtful about the treatment and wondered
why she was flinching, after all, he certainly wouldn't flinch. After her treatment, she
had him allow Ms. Ingram to work on his feet. on the big toe and he came out of the chair
saying, "That hurt!" She asked if he had headaches and he immediately affirmed
that he had severe ones. After about three sessions, they went away completely.
In our office, we've seen some interesting results, one client who just recently was
diagnosed with a heart condition. During her session, she felt a shock of energy go from
her heart are down her left arm and felt an immediate lessening of pressure. She said she
slept better than she had in a long time and the pressure hasn't returned. As of this
writing, it's been 4 weeks.
For relaxing, it is exceedingly effective. Linda Scarbrough, a reporter for The Sunday
Sun, a small town newspaper said: "I got my toes rubbed . . . Me, I felt like a
puddle of collapsed gelatin when the treatment ended. I could barely shuffle back to the
office: it was like walking through molasses. But boy, was I relaxed!"
"And if lady Doylene is a product of reflexology and herbal treatments, the stuff
must work. She is one of the biggest smilers I have ever seen, and by the looks of it,
healthy as all get-out."--Sunday, May 1, 1983
Once Doylene was able to aid a man whose foot was diagnosed as gangrenous and scheduled to
be removed. In one session, the toe went from black to a nice, healthy, pink. He canceled
his surgery and, to my knowledge, still has his foot 8 years later.
How I wish all were so successful but since we are all such complex individuals, no one
therapy will work for all. However, a very special aspect of Reflexology is there is no
danger in it and the possibility of relief and relaxation is definitely worth trying for
yourself.

Garlic: Setting the Record Straight
By Alexander G. Schauss, PhD and Jennifer Morganti
As far back as 3000 B.C., the Babylonians understood the versatile
benefits of garlic (Allium sativam). It was well accepted as a medicine for a wide range
of applications, including respiratory tract infections, skin disorders, parasitic
infections and as an antibiotic and antimicrobial agent.
During the Middle Ages numerous accounts are reported on the benefits of garlic,
especially during plagues. One case chronicles a family that remained unharmed during the
Great Plague and survived while thousands of families died around them. They attributed
their survival to their family's daily consumption of garlic.
During World War II, garlic aided wounded soldiers who were being treated by nurses and
doctors in battlefield hospitals, especially in the prevention of gangrene and sepsis
(blood poisoning). However, despite the many benefits of garlic chronicled up to the
1940s, its medicinal use and popularity waned after the war due to the introduction of
"miracle drugs" such as penicillin 1.
Nevertheless, given garlic's wide-spread value as a medicinal herb, research began to pick
up again by the early 1950s. Between 1950 and 1997, over 500 scientific papers were
published demonstrating or reporting on the medicinal properties of garlic, especially
relative to such diseases as cancer, hypertension, diabetes, and various cardiovascular
diseases. During this same time period over 200 papers were published on garlic's
antimicrobial properties, particularly against a wide range of pathogenic organisms.
Over 1,000 papers
Numerous papers also reported on garlic's ability to ameliorate heavy
metal toxicity, especially against such neurotoxic metals as mercury and cadmium, while
another 150 papers described the use of garlic in the treatment of hypoglycemia,
intestinal disorders and a wide variety of other medical conditions. As a result of the
proliferation of papers published in the scientific literature on garlic since World War
II, there are now well over 1,000 papers documenting the efficacy and safety of garlic as
an herbal medidne.
In recent years microbiologists and public health officials have become increasingly
alarmed at the rapid rate in which pathogenic bacteria are becoming drug resistant to a
number of powerful antibiotics. This is occurring because pathogens can mutate over time.
By comparison, garlic has been reported for thousands of years to possess potent
antibiotic-like activity, yet to date, no pathogenic organism has mutated and become
resistant to garlic(2). Hence, garlic may rescue mankind in the 21st century from such
destructive drug-resistant pathogens.
This antimicrobial/antibiotic effect of garlic is believed to be largely due to its
allicin content. In vitro studies have demonstrated that allicin inhibits the growth of
both pathogenic gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria (3). There even appears to be a
synergistic effect when garlic is used in conjunction with antibiotics(4). Other in vitro
studies have demonstrated that garlic is not only antimicrobial, but also
anti-candidal(5).
This property has not been overlooked by researchers searching for useful herbs that are
able to control candidiasis in patients with opportunistic infections, such as is common
in AIDS, or in individuals developing candidiasis following antibiotic therapy.
Garlic and Cancer Research
Epidemiological studies have found that populations who eat significant
quantities of garlic have a decreased incidence of gastrointestinal cancer. For example,
in certain areas of China, large amounts of garlic are consumed which has been correlated
with a very low incidence of gastric cancers. Allicin is believed by most scientists to be
the biotransformation product in garlic that prevents many cancers (6).
Animal studies show that a topical application of garlic oil inhibits skin tumor formation
induced by a carcinogenie substance (7). When tumor cells are incubated with fresh garlic
extract, tumors can be prevented. This benefit would not be true for boiled garlic.
Studies show that when cells are incubated in fresh garlic and then injected into mice, no
tumors are formed, whereas cells that are incubated in boiled garlic do initiate tumor
formation (8). It has also been demonstrated that when an aqueous garlic extract is
administered to mice there is a significant reduction in the incidence of experimental
cervical cancer compared to a placebo (23% versus 73%) (9)
Hypotensive Effect
Long-term garlic supplementation has a hypotensive effect in patients
with hypertension who consume a sufficient amount of the herb. In one study, a decrease in
blood pressure was noted six hours after ingestion of powdered garlic. The mechanism of
action is related to garlic's ability to decrease blood viscosity and to increase the
capillary flow rate, actions which contribute to a decrease in blood pressure(10). Yet
garlic will not lower blood pressure in individuals with normal blood pressure, suggesting
that it is adaptogenic(11).
Numerous studies have shown that garlic can lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in
hypercholesterolemic patients. Garlic lowers LDL levels ("bad" cholesterol) and
increases HDL levels ("good" cholesterol). In a randomized, placebo-controlled
study, 261 hyperlipidemic patients consumed 800 mg. garlic powder tablets versus placebo
for 16 weeks. Those patients taking garlic experienced a 12% drop in cholesterol levels
and a 17% drop in triglycerides compared to placebo (12). In patients with the most severe
hyperlipidemia reduction in lipid levels was even more significant
.
Another investigation involved 40 hypercholesterolemic patients in a double-blind,
placebo-controlled study. The patients took 900 mg of powdered garlic per day for four
months. At the end of the study these patients experienced a significant reduction in both
cholesterol and triglyceride levels, as well as a decrease in blood pressure, compared to
the placebo group(13).
Controversial Papers
Recently, garlic's cholesterol lowering properties were called into
question by two papers published in the Journal of the American Medical Association
(JAMA) and the Archives of Internal Medicine.
JAMA published a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial on the effects of garlic on 25
patients with moderate hypercholesterolemia(14).
Patients were randomized to take 5 mg. garlic oil or placebo twice daily for 12 weeks.
Compared with placebo, the authors claimed that garlic oil did not significantly lower
serum levels of cho lesterol or lipids and for that reason should not be recommended as a
therapy for lowering serum lipid levels.
Remarkably, the joumal published the paper even though no evidence was presented that the
product used for the study actually reached the levels of absorption necessary to
demonstrate a therapeutic effect, or was given in therapeutic amounts. Previous studies
have shown that a dose in the range of 18 mg. to 25 mg. results in a therapeutic effect
(15,16). Further, independent in vitro and in vivo studies of the product used in the
trial found that only 36% of the actual amount of garlic oil was released from its
beta-cyclodextrin-bound tablets.
A forthcoming critique of the JAMA study in the Quarterly Review of Natural
Medicine will report that the capsule of the product may survive the digestive system
without dissolving. If this is confirmed by others, then this may easily explain the lack
of effect reported by the JAMA authors. These types of flaws in the design and
administration of the study reported in JAMA point out the importance of first proving
that the product is bioactive and potentially therapeutic before subjecting it to a
double-blind type of design.
The manufacturing, formulation, type of extract and dosage, are all variables that can
influence the therapeutic potential of a dietary supplement.
The importance of this statement can be illustrated by reviewing the criticisms weighed
against the second negative garlic study that appeared the same month in another journal,
The Archives of Internal Medicine(17). At the time this study was released, many
controlled trials had been published which documented that garlic could successfully lower
cholesterol levels in hypercholestolemia patients(18,12,19,20,13).
It is important to note that the authors of the Archives paper failed to mention that
although studies reported up to 1995 for this product showed positive results, studies
after 1995 all showed negative results levels using the product they selected13,17. Could
the product have changed after 19957 This possibility is evident when reviewing the
literature. These observations emphasize that the form of a supplement is important. A
powdered garlic tablet must have a protective coating that prevents stomach acid from
dissolving the tablet and inactivating a special enzyme present in garlic.
Allicin is a well documented constituent of garlic and is believed to be the main
ingredient which reduces cholesterol and triglyceride levels, prevents tumor growth and
acts as an antimicrobial. In developing a garlic product, there are many criteria that can
optimize allicin activity, however, there is no enforcement of these standards.
Variation in quality is one likely explanation for the variability in research study
outcomes such as reported by the Annals of Internal Medicine and JAMA,
despite overwhelming evidence of the benefits of garlic.
It is unfortunate that JAMA and Archives of Internal Medicine and
subsequently the mass media made sweeping generalizations about all garlic products, and
invalidated previous positive studies that found it useful for lowering cholesterol
levels. The health benefits of garlic are undeniable and are supported by thousands of
years of use world-wide and a solid modern foundation of scientific research.
USP Monograph on Garlic
The U.S. Pharmacopoeia Convention (USP) is preparing to release an
informational monograph on garlic by early 1999. USP monographs are evidence-based,
consensus position papers that examine clinically relevant dietary supplements for both
the health care professional and
their patients. The final draft on garlic is expected to report that garlic is safe to use
by consumers but will fall short of recommending it for any condition.
This is because USP's literature review process is used to evaluate claims of efficacy for
drugs. USP is struggling to determine how to go about examining botanicals that have a
long history of safe use without the requisite number of controlled trials and
toxicological studies demanded of patented drugs. Hence, despite controlled clinical
trials, epidemi-
ological studies, and even consensus among experts, USP will not make claims for efficacy
until garlic earns the status of "General Recognition of Safety & Efficacy"
that to date has only been reserved for drugs.
However, at a recent meeting sponsored by USP to meet with scientists and manufacturers of
dietary supplements many participants urged the USP to modify their criteria so as to take
into consideration the complex nature and historical use of botanicals such as garlic. As
a result, given the dynamic nature of USP monographs, recognition of garlic's safety and
efficacy is inevitable.

Shark Cartilage:
How It May Take a Bite Out of Cancer
There is no more feared predator than the shark, and those who advocate the use of
shark cartilage say the 400-million-year-old killing machine can be used to menace a new
prey: cancer.
Using shark cartilage to arrest the growth of cancer and even reduce existing tumors has
begun to gain recognition in the '90s, thanks in large part to the efforts of Dr.William
Lane, author of the book Sharks Don't Get Cancer.
According to Lane, the abundance of cartilage in sharks may account for why they are one
of the few creatures on earth that almost never get cancer. And by trying to understand
how cartilage helps prevent the growth of cancerous tumors in these awe-inpiring fish,
researchers hope to find a way of preventing cancer in humans.
Sharks, according to Lane, don't have a single bone in their bodies. Their skeletons are
made of pure cartilage, unlike most animals whose skeletons are composed of calcified
bone. Having a body made of cartilage, which is less dense and more pliable than bone,
provides a shark with the advantages of buoyancy and flexibility, Lane explains.
Sharks also have a highly effective and unusual immune system which helps them to heal
their wounds quickly, and keeps these predators largely free of infection. Unlike a human
being whose immune system stays dormant until exposed to antigens, a shark's immune system
contains a large amount of antibodies that circulate throughout its bloodstream ready to
attack any bacterial and viral infections at any time. These anti-bodies also protect
sharks against chemicals and other carcinogens "that easily kill most mammals."
Lane cites the research of Michael Sigel, chairman emeritus of the Department of
Microbiology and Immunology at the University of South Carolina Medical School. According
to Lane, Sigel disscovered that sharks' immune systems not only protect against bacteria,
viruses and chemicals, but also seem to help protect against cancer.
The fact that sharks resist cancer even when placed in "carcinogen-laden enclosed
water," is described by Lane as the catalyst for his quest "to know how the
information [of how sharks resist cancer] might be translated into a prevention or therapy
for humans."
To understand how shark cartilage is believed to resist cancer, it is first necessary to
understand how cancer grows within a cell. In 1971, Dr. Judah Folkman published his now
famous and highly regarded hypothesis that tumors cannot grow without a network of blood
vessels to nourish them and to remove waste products. He also concluded that inhibiting
the development of these blood vessels could be a potential cancer therapy.
Dr Folkiman felt that if angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels during an
individual's development or growth, or the replacement of injured vessels in existing
tissue, could be stopped, tumor growth could likewise be stopped.
Since cartilage is avascular, meaning it has no blood vessels, researchers began to reason
that it might have a way of keeping the blood vessels from developing. And more than 20
years after the initial research began, Dr. Folianan listed 13 substances that inhibit
angiogenesis-one of them being shark cartilage-in his book Biologic Therapy of Cancer.
But, "although the scientific detectives knew that they were on to something, their
training had them conditioned to look for a pure chemical that could be isolated,
synthesized and patented," according to Lane.
He goes on to explain that the only way a company can get FDA approval for a drug so it
can be patented, is to spend approximately $231 million doing the testing required by the
FDA" So far, he indicates, researchers have had no luck synthesizing the potent
factors of shark cartilage in the lab.
Lane has applied for and very recently been given full FDA permission to do phase II
clinical trials on humans for advanced non-responsive prostate cancer as well as Kaposi's
Sarcoma.
"These trials at a leading cancer research center will be starting shortly, and,
assuming positive responses, could lead to FDA approval in less than two years," Lane
said in a telephone interview with WHOLE FOODS BUSINESS.
Today, shark cartilage is available as a food supplement. It, like all other food
supplements, is not considered medicinal, and is controlled by the FDA's food regulations,
not by regulations for drugs, according to Lane.
Yet despite numerous research and clinical trials which have reported success using shark
cartilage in countries like Japan and Mexico, and despite coverage by CNN and "60
Minutes," Lane says its benefits are still "a secret."
Shark cartilage is said to cause no adverse side effects or toxicity, and even has
beneficial side effects. "Once shark cartilage is in a person's system, its
anti-inflammatory and antiangiogenic characteristics begin to work on a variety of
diseases...including arthritis, psoriasis and enteritis," says Lane.
Lane makes it a point to clarity that "without much more evidence, I am not
suggestlng that conventional medical approaches be replaced by shark cartilage
administration." He does suggest that patients "do their homework" and get
all the facts they can on the use of any therapies to treat their condition.

What is Magnetic Health?
Glynda Chambliss
Well, my definition would be someone vibrantly alive, making a
difference in their world, succeeding where others fail and exhibiting a magnetic
personality which attracts successful, vibrant people.
I know you've seen people like that but believe it could ever be you. What if there's a
way that you, too can enjoy a magnetic personality? There is. If you want a magnetic
personality, you need magnets!
Did you know that since the days of the ancient Egyptians, naturally forming magnets,
called lodestones, were used in standard medical treatments of the day. Throughout the
centuries, many cultures have recognized their use (even Elizabeth the First of England's
personal physician used them) but, until our day, no real scientific evidence existed for
its use.
Today, there are researchers such as William H. Philpott, M.D., George J. Washnis with
Richard Z. Hricak, Robert O. Becker, M.D., Albert Roy Davis and Walter C. Rawls, Jr. and
Kyoichi Nakagawa of Japan are learning more and more about the effects of magnets on the
human body.
North vs. South
The North wins again! Just a few years ago it was believed that there
was basically no difference between North and South Pole energy and either side of a
magnet was considered useful for any health problem you might encounter. However, research
now reveals there is a definite difference between the two opposing forces.
North Pole Energy (also called Negative energy) contains electrons which spin left
(counterclockwise) while South Pole Energy (also called Positive Energy) has electrons
which spin right. Interestingly, for the body, negative energy's effect is positive and
positive energy's effect is sometimes negative. Thus, when you go somewhere to buy a
magnet, don't buy a bipole magnet which has both North and South Pole energy on the same
side or a horseshoe magnet which does something very similar. Also, realize that different
fields of magnetic use have different ways of labeling North or South poles.
Since North and South Pole energy are attracted to each other, it is quite simple to
determine which is which. When you wish to identify North Pole, you need either, 1) a
compass with its north seeking needle or, 2) suspend a unipole magnet from a string. This
works because the earth itself is a huge magnet with both a North Pole and a South Pole.
The South pole of the magnet will always face North no matter how many times it spins
because it is North seeking. Since like repels like, you can also use a correctly marked
North Pole magnet. .
If the earth is a huge magnet, then why would we need extra energy? Can't we get enough
from the earth, the natural way? Well, several hundred years ago that was more true than
it is today. Scientists have been recording the strength of the earth's magnetic field for
over 155 years. In that time, they've noticed that the earth's magnetic field is
decreasing at an alarming rate.
Depending on whose study you read, the earth's magnetic field has decreased from 4.0 Gauss
4,000 years ago to around 0.4 Gauss today! Dr. Kyoichi Nakagawa, Director of Isuzu
Hospital in Tokyo, Japan who has been studying biomagnetic energy for more than 20 years,
refers to authorites who have demonstrated the earth's magnetic field has diminished 50%
over the last 500 years! Could this be a large portion of the increase in cellular
degeneration we now see? I believe so.
Dr. Nakagawa agrees with me; he believes that the metal buildings, automobiles, trains,
etc are absorbing the earth's magnetic field thereby causing interference and loss of
gauss strength. These metal structures not only absorb the magnetic energy, they shield us
from this energy. My personal belief is that the underground nuclear testing and the
stripping of the earth's resources of oil, coal, etc. are also leaching the earth's energy
source.
All of this leads to what Dr. Nakagawa terms: MAGNETIC FIELD DEFICIENCY SYNDROME which
includes: stiffness of shoulders, back and neck, chest pains, headache, heaviness of head,
dizziness, insomnia, habitual constipations and general lassitude. Often these symptoms
disappear when the person is subjected to higher gauss magnetic strength.
Amalgam Dental Fillings
What do your innocent fillings have to do with your health? Well, guess
what? They may not be quite so innocent! Dental Amalgam Fillings, a combination of Mercury
(a toxic metal) and Silver (a trace mineral) produce a direct flow of current between
fillings. This magnetic field can interfere with biological energy in general and brain
function in particular. Weakness and ringing in the ears have often gone away with
sufficient gauss magnetic strength. If they don't go away, a qualified dentist needs to
remove them and replace them with nonmetal fillings. Please see the book Are Your
Dental Fillings Poisoning You?
Attacks from All Sides
Add to this the constant bombardment of chemicals in the air we
breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink and the homes we live in and it's no wonder
our bodies can't keep up. Still, there is a force that is in many ways much more
dangerous. It's the large amounts of electromagnetic energy emanating from all our
wondrous electrical appliances.
This electromagnetic energy is doubly dangerous because it attacks us on two fronts.
Number 1 is the fact that true health depends upon a balance between the expansive South
and the contractive North. The energy from power lines and appliances is almost
exclusively South pole. Since the earth, our most reliable source of North pole balance is
weakening, we are unable to cope with this. You've undoubtedly heard about the cases of
people, especially children, who are developing cancer, birth defects and heart problems
when they live too close to high powered electrical stations.
The second reason this is so dangerous to our health is the frequency of the
electromagnetic pulse. The earth produces a frequency of about 7.95 cycles per second
while the radio waves and electromagnetic frequencies are 60 cycles per second. This may
not sound so bad until you realize that the human brain is normally around 8-12 cycles
and, when concentrating rises to a whopping 18-22 cycles. It's no wonder so many people
feel as though they are losing their minds! Their wiring is all out of whack.
So, why would one person be able to deal with this bombardment while another crumbles?
This can be better understood when you realize that energy is the difference. Energy is
the key between fighting off an infection or succumbing to it. Sometimes, even between
living and dying. Therefore, it only makes sense to do all you can to increase your energy
levels. That's where the magnets come in.
North Pole Negative Energy's Effect On Your Body
According to the BIOMAGNETIC HANDBOOK by Dr. William H. Philpott &
Sharon Taplin, North Pole Energy produces the following effects in the body:
1. Provides Oxygen to the Cells Since the cells are weak magnets containing both a
positive and negative charge, the cell assumes the polarity of the magnetic field around
it. Thus the counterclockwise spin of North Pole energy pulls oxygen into the cell.
2. Normalizes the Acid/Alkaline Balance North Pole Negative energy is alkalinizing yet
doesn't over-alkalinize with the effect of normalizing the pH. An over-acid system
produces allergies, toxic states, sore/stiff muscles, chemical hypersensitivity and many
disease states. Insect bites also produce an acid state in the body which often overpowers
the immune system.
3. Encourages Deep Sleep During sleep the polarity of the brain and central nervous system
switches to negative magnetic energy. Placing the body and particularly the brain in a
negative magnetic field encourages deep sleep by magnetically charging the crystals in the
Pineal Gland which respond by producing Melatonin which in turn regulates sleep patterns
and even brain response.
4. Builds Immunity All known microorganisms whether bacterial, viral or fungal and
parasites whether tape worms, pin worms, heart worms, etc, are positive magnetic energy
driven and therefore can be stunned or retarded by the application of North Pole Negative.
They are further damaged by the oxygen now in the cells and the alkaline environment
produced by the North Pole Negative energy.
One woman who was unable to work or go out into society because of extreme environmental
sensitivity, found that a flexible magnet placed inside a hat on top of her head made it
possible for her to go inside a mall for up to 2 hours at a time!
5. Reduces Fluid Retention Intercellular edema (meaning inside the cells) is reduced when
Negative North Pole energy is introduced to it because it helps normalize the action of
the Sodium/Potassium Pump and gets the Sodium out of the cell and the Potassium in it. The
excess fluid is then carried away by the blood and lymph. Extracellular edema (meaning
outside the cells) exists in areas without drainage capacity like your eye, sinuses and
joints is helped by putting the North Pole Negative energy to the side of the affected
area so the fluid will be drawn away and toward an outlet.
6. Relieves/Stops Pain & Other Symptoms Since pain is usually a symptom of an
imbalance in pH and/or inflammation of the area, pain often simply disappears because
there is no longer a need for it.
7. Promotes Mental Acuity & Reasonableness The North Pole Negative energy also
normalizes abnormal electrical firing in the brain and calms an electrically overcharged
brain.
8. Aids in Reducing & Dissolving Fatty Deposits The North Pole Negative energy is
alkaline and therefore neutralizes the acid in fatty tissue thereby dissolving the
substance. This is done very slowly. Don't expect results overnight.
9. Aids in Reducing Fat & Calcium in the Circulatory System Along with the
aforementioned neutralization of fatty deposits, the increased cellular activity further
stimulates movement of the hemogobin in the blood vessels thus decreasing deposits in
them.
Are You Ready To Add Magnets To Your Life?
If so, there are many fascinating ways to add magnets to your magnetic
personality.
You can use Ace bandages and simpy wrap a magnet or two up with the leg, wrist, whatever.
You can also buy special bandages with magnets already sewn in.
You can go to the local hardware store or Radio Shack and buy small ceramic magnets for
around 50 cents. They are weak but several of them within an area can be very effective.
Just make sure you have a compass or use one of the other methods mentioned to determing
North from South. These, along with larger, more powerful magnets purchased from specialty
stores, can be taped or wrapped on.
You can use a large ceramic block magnet, I like one 4 " x 6" x 1/2". Since
the larger and denser the magnet, the further its reach, you can place that under your
pillow, sit on it or put it over whatever area hurts. It's extremely portable &
effective. I know of two people with head injuries (one was kicked by a horse) who noticed
faster healing with an immediate decrease in pain that they both attributed to their block
magnet.
Another great way to use the larger block magnet is to simply put a glass of water over it
for 5 minutes or more and thereby have North Pole Negative magnetic energy to drink.
(Several small magnets could be glued or taped to the outside of the glass.) Some people
swear by this for increased resistance to infection even after exposure.
My favorite way to go magnets is with a bed since it enhances restful sleep and there's
nothing to tape, wrap or carry. As they say, "no muss, no fuss". I know I wake
feeling more prepared to face my day.
There are flexible magnets which can bend to fit a certain area although their strength is
considerably less. There are also magnetic seat cushions, magnetic pet cushions and even
magnetic jewelry so that you have total freedom to choose your favorite path to a magnetic
personality!
Whatever way you choose to enhance your magnetic personality, I'm sure you won't regret
it.
Side Effects
There are no known side effects to North Pole Negative energy. If pain
seems to increase, it may be drawing the fluid to an area where it cannot drain as well.
Moving it just a little over or above usually allows the fluid to drain away and pain to
dissipate.
If you are on prescription drugs, it would be wise to have your doctor monitor your
condition closely since the magnets increase body energy and thereby stimulate tissue
repair. You will probably find you need to decrease your dosage more rapidly than usual.
PRECAUTIONS
DO NOT use magnets on the abdomen during PREGNANCY. Magnetism has an
effect on the replication of cells and they replicate very quickly in a fetus.
DO NOT use a magnetic bed or magnet(s) on chest with a PACEMAKER or DEFIBILLATOR. A magnet
within two inches of these instruments can interrupt their function.
DO NOT use magnetic bed 24 hours a day if you're ill. Adrenal function may be suppressed
since North Pole Negative energy calms. Use the bed 8-10 hours per day then get away for a
few hours. If pain persists, use spot applications of magnets where needed.
DO NOT use magnetic energy on abdomen for 60-90 minutes following meals in order to allow
peristalsis to take place.
DO NOT use positive magnetic energy unless under medical supervision since it can lead to
overstimulation of brain activity, microorganisms, etc.
I simply couldn't say enough in this article. I do want to highly recommend The
Biomagnetic Handbook I mentioned earlier. Much of this information came from it and it
is truly fascinating. For more information on magnets, check out our online Magnetic
Catalog linked below. The first 5 pages or so are loaded with information.

What are Chinese Herbs
- Have you ever wondered why is it that the Chinese live healthier and
longer lives than any other people in the world? One of the main reasons is their use of
rejuvenating herbs.
- It's o secret then, that herbs help improve the quality of our health;
many of today's wonder drugs are derived from them.
- Therefore, the Chinese have had such remarkable success with herbal
curative formulas; they've been developing, improving and perfecting them for 5000 years.

Acupuncture, Qigong, and "Chinese Medicine"
Stephen Barrett, M.D.
"Chinese medicine," often called "Oriental medicine" or
"traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)," encompasses a vast array of folk medical
practices based on mysticism. It holds that the body's vital energy (chi or qi)
circulates through 14 channels, called meridians, that have branches connected to
bodily organs and functions. Illness is attributed to imbalance or interruption of chi..
Ancient practices such as acupuncture and Qigong are claimed to restore balance.
Traditional acupuncture, as now practiced, involves the insertion of stainless steel
needles into various body areas. A low-frequency current may be applied to the needles to
produce greater stimulation. Other procedures used separately or together with acupuncture
include: moxibustion (burning of floss or herbs applied to the skin); injection of sterile
water, procaine, morphine, vitamins, or homeopathic solutions through the inserted
needles; applications of laser beams (laserpuncture); placement of needles in the external
ear (auriculotherapy); and acupressure (use of manual pressure). Treatment is applied to
"acupuncture points," which are said to be located throughout the body.
Originally there were 365 such points, corresponding to the days of the year, but the
number identified by proponents during the past 2,000 years has increased gradually to
about 2,000 [1]. Some practitioners place needles at or near the site of disease, whereas
others select points on the basis of symptoms. In traditional acupuncture, a combination
of points is usually used.
Qigong is also claimed to influence the flow of "vital energy." Internal
Qigong involves deep breathing, concentration, and relaxation techniques used by
individuals for themselves. External Qigong is performed by "Qigong masters" who
claim to cure a wide variety of diseases with energy released from their fingertips.
However, scientific investigators of Qigong masters in China have found no evidence of
paranormal powers and some evidence of deception. They found, for example, that a patient
lying on a table about eight feet from a Qigong master moved rhythmically or thrashed
about as the master moved his hands. But when she was placed so that she could no longer
see him, her movements were unrelated to his [2]. Falun gong, which China recently banned, is a
Qigong varient claimed to be "a powerful mechanism for healing, stress relief and
health improvements."
Most acupuncturists espouse the traditional Chinese view of health and disease and
consider acupuncture, herbal medicine, and related practices to be valid approaches to the
full gamut of disease. Others reject the traditional approach and merely claim that
acupuncture offers a simple way to achieve pain relief. The diagnostic process used by TCM
practitioners may include questioning (medical history, lifestyle), observations (skin,
tongue, color), listening (breathing sounds), and pulse-taking. Six pulse aspects said to
correlate with body organs or functions are checked on each wrist to determine which
meridians are "deficient" in chi. (Medical science recognizes only one
pulse, corresponding to the heartbeat, which can be felt in the wrist, neck, feet, and
various other places.) Some acupuncturists state that the electrical properties of the
body may become imbalanced weeks or even months before symptoms occur. These practitioners
claim that acupuncture can be used to treat conditions when the patient just "doesn't
feel right," even though no disease is apparent.
TCM (as well as the folk medical practices of various other Asian countries) is a
threat to certain animal species. For example, black bears -- valued for their gall
bladders -- have been hunted nearly to extinction in Asia, and poaching of black bears is a growing
problem in North America.
Dubious Claims
The conditions claimed to respond to acupuncture include chronic pain (neck and back
pain, migraine headaches), acute injury-related pain (strains, muscle and ligament tears),
gastrointestinal problems (indigestion, ulcers, constipation, diarrhea), cardiovascular
conditions (high and low blood pressure), genitourinary problems (menstrual irregularity,
frigidity, impotence), muscle and nerve conditions (paralysis, deafness), and behavioral
problems (overeating, drug dependence, smoking). However, the evidence supporting these
claims consists mostly of practitioners' observations and poorly designed studies. A
controlled study found that electroacupuncture of the ear was no more effective than
placebo stimulation (light touching) against chronic pain [3]. In 1990, three Dutch
epidemiologists analyzed 51 controlled studies of acupuncture for chronic pain and
concluded that "the quality of even the better studies proved to be mediocre. . . .
The efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of chronic pain remains doubtful." [4]
They also examined reports of acupuncture used to treat addictions to cigarettes, heroin,
and alcohol, and concluded that claims that acupuncture is effective as a therapy for
these conditions are not supported by sound clinical research [5].
Acupuncture anesthesia is not used for surgery in the Orient to the extent that its
proponents suggest. In China physicians screen out patients who appear to be unsuitable.
Acupuncture is not used for emergency surgery and often is accompanied by local anesthesia
or narcotic medication [6].
How acupuncture may relieve pain is unclear. One theory suggests that pain impulses are
blocked from reaching the spinal cord or brain at various "gates" to these
areas. Another theory suggests that acupuncture stimulates the body to produce
narcotic-like substances called endorphins, which reduce pain. Other theories
suggest that the placebo effect, external suggestion (hypnosis), and cultural conditioning
are important factors. Melzack and Wall note that pain relief produced by acupuncture can
also be produced by many other types of sensory hyperstimulation, such as electricity and
heat at acupuncture points and elsewhere in the body. They conclude that "the
effectiveness of all of these forms of stimulation indicates that acupuncture is not a
magical procedure but only one of many ways to produce analgesia [pain relief] by an
intense sensory input." In 1981, the American Medical Association Council on
Scientific Affairs noted that pain relief does not occur consistently or reproducibly in
most people and does not operate at all in some people [7].
In 1995, George A. Ulett, M.D., Ph.D., Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, University of
Missouri School of Medicine, stated that "devoid of metaphysical thinking,
acupuncture becomes a rather simple technique that can be useful as a nondrug method of
pain control." He believes that the traditional Chinese variety is primarily a
placebo treatment, but electrical stimulation of about 80 acupuncture points has been
proven useful for pain control [8].
The quality of TCM research in China has been extremely poor. A recent analysis of
2,938 reports of clinical trials reported in Chinese medical journals concluded that that
no conclusions could be drawn from the vast majority of them. The researchers stated:
In most of the trials, disease was defined and diagnosed according to conventional
medicine; trial outcomes were assessed with objective or subjective (or both) methods of
conventional medicine, often complemented by traditional Chinese methods. Over 90% of the
trials in non-specialist journals evaluated herbal treatments that were mostly proprietary
Chinese medicines. . . .
Although methodological quality has been improving over the years, many problems
remain. The method of randomisation was often inappropriately described. Blinding was used
in only 15% of trials. Only a few studies had sample sizes of 300 subjects or more. Many
trials used as a control another Chinese medicine treatment whose effectiveness had often
not been evaluated by randomised controlled trials. Most trials focused on short term or
intermediate rather than long term outcomes. Most trials did not report data on compliance
and completeness of follow up. Effectiveness was rarely quantitatively expressed and
reported. Intention to treat analysis was never mentioned. Over half did not report data
on baseline characteristics or on side effects. Many trials were published as short
reports. Most trials claimed that the tested treatments were effective, indicating that
publication bias may be common; a funnel plot of the 49 trials of acupuncture in the
treatment of stroke confirmed selective publication of positive trials in the area,
suggesting that acupuncture may not be more effective than the control treatments. [9]
Two scientists at the University of Heidleberg have developed a "fake needle"
that may enable acupuncture researchers to perform better-designed controlled studies. The
device is a needle with a blunt tip that moves freely within a copper handle. When the tip
touches the skin, the patient feels a sensation similar to that of an acupuncture needle.
At the same time, the visible part of the needle moves inside the handle so it appears to
shorten as though penetrating the skin. When the device was tested on volunteers, none
suspected that it had not penetrated the skin [10].
Significant Risks
Improperly performed acupuncture can cause fainting, local hematoma (due to bleeding
from a punctured blood vessel), pneumothorax (punctured lung), convulsions, local
infections, hepatitis B (from unsterile needles), bacterial endocarditis, contact
dermatitis, and nerve damage. The herbs used by acupuncture practitioners are not
regulated for safety, potency, or effectiveness. There is also risk that an acupuncturist
whose approach to diagnosis is not based on scientific concepts will fail to diagnose a
dangerous condition.
The adverse effects of acupuncture are probably related to the nature of the
practitioner's training. A survey of 1,135 Norwegian physicians revealed 66 cases of
infection, 25 cases of punctured lung, 31 cases of increased pain, and 80 other cases with
complications. A parallel survey of 197 acupuncturists, who are more apt to see immediate
complications, yielded 132 cases of fainting, 26 cases of increased pain, 8 cases of
pneumothorax, and 45 other adverse results [11]. However, a 5-year study involving 76
acupuncturists at a Japanese medical facility tabulated only 64 adverse event reports
(including 16 forgotten needles and 13 cases of transient low blood pressure) associated
with 55,591 acupuncture treatments. No serious complications were reported. The researchers
concluded that serious adverse reactions are uncommon among acupuncturists who are
medically trained [12].
Questionable Standards
In 1971, an acupuncture boom occurred in the United States because of stories about
visits to China by various American dignitaries. Entrepreneurs, both medical and
nonmedical, began using flamboyant advertising techniques to promote clinics, seminars,
demonstrations, books, correspondence courses, and do-it-yourself kits. Today some states
restrict the practice of acupuncture to physicians or others operating under their direct
supervision. In about 20 states, people who lack medical training can perform acupuncture
without medical supervision. The FDA now classifies acupuncture needles as Class II
medical devices and requires labeling for one-time use by practitioners who are legally
authorized to use them [13]. Acupuncture is not covered under Medicare. The March 1998
issue of the Journal of the American Chiropractic Association carried a five-part cover
story encouraging chiropractors to get acupuncture training, which, according to one
contributor, would enable them to broaden the scope of their practice [14].
The National Certification Commission for Acupuncture
and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) has set voluntary certification standards and certified
several thousand practitioners. As of November 1998, 32 states have licensing
laws, with 29 of them using NCCAOM examination as all or part of their educational,
training, or examination requirement, and three with addditional eligibility criteria. The
credentials used by acupuncturists include C.A. (certified acupuncturist), Lic. Ac.
(licensed acupuncturist), M.A. (master acupuncturist), Dip. Ac. (diplomate of
acupuncture), and O.M.D. (doctor of Oriental medicine). Some of these have legal
significance, but they do not signify that the holder is competent to make adequate
diagnoses or render appropriate treatment.
In 1990, the U.S. Secretary of Education recognized what is now called the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental
Medicine (ACAOM) as an accrediting agency. However, such recognition is not based on
the scientific validity of what is taught but upon other criteria [15]. Ulett has noted:
Certification of acupuncturists is a sham. While a few of those so accredited are naive
physicians, most are nonmedical persons who only play at being doctor and use this
certification as an umbrella for a host of unproven New Age hokum treatments.
Unfortunately, a few HMOs, hospitals, and even medical schools are succumbing to the bait
and exposing patients to such bogus treatments when they need real medical care.
The National Council Against Health Fraud has
concluded:
 | Acupuncture is an unproven modality of treatment. |
 | Its theory and practice are based on primitive and fanciful concepts of health and
disease that bear no relationship to present scientific knowledge |
 | Research during the past 20 years has not demonstrated that acupuncture is effective
against any disease. |
 | Perceived effects of acupuncture are probably due to a combination of expectation,
suggestion, counter-irritation, conditioning, and other psychologic mechanisms. |
 | The use of acupuncture should be restricted to appropriate research settings, |
 | Insurance companies should not be required by law to cover acupuncture treatment, |
 | Licensure of lay acupuncturists should be phased out. |
 | Consumers who wish to try acupuncture should discuss their situation with a
knowledgeable physician who has no commercial interest [16]. |
The NIH Debacle
In November 1997, a Consensus Development Conference sponsored by the National
Institutes of Health and several other agencies concluded that "there is sufficient
evidence . . . of acupuncture's value to expand its use into conventional medicine and to
encourage further studies of its physiology and clinical value." [17] The panelists
also suggested that the federal government and insurance companies expand coverage of
acupuncture so more people can have access to it. These conclusions were not based on
research done since NCAHF's position paper was published. Rather, they reflected the bias
of the panelists who were selected by a planning committee dominated by acupuncture
proponents [18]. NCAHF board chairman Wallace Sampson, M.D., has described the conference
"a consensus of proponents, not a consensus of valid scientific opinion."
Although the report described some serious problems, it failed to place them into
proper perspective. The panel acknowledged that "the vast majority of papers studying
acupuncture consist of case reports, case series, or intervention studies with designs
inadequate to assess efficacy" and that "relatively few" high-quality
controlled trials have been published about acupuncture's effects. But it reported that
"the World Health Organization has listed more than 40 [conditions] for which
[acupuncture] may be indicated." This sentence should have been followed by a
statement that the list was not valid.
Far more serious, although the consensus report touched on Chinese acupuncture theory,
it failed to point out the danger and economic waste involved in going to practitioners
who can't make appropriate diagnoses. The report noted:
 | The general theory of acupuncture is based on the premise that there are patterns of
energy flow (Qi) through the body that are essential for health. Disruptions of this flow
are believed to be responsible for disease. The acupuncturist can correct imbalances of
flow at identifiable points close to the skin. |
 | Acupuncture focuses on a holistic, energy-based approach to the patient rather than a
disease-oriented diagnostic and treatment model. |
 | Despite considerable efforts to understand the anatomy and physiology of the
"acupuncture points," the definition and characterization of these points
remains controversial. Even more elusive is the scientific basis of some of the key
traditional Eastern medical concepts such as the circulation of Qi, the meridian system,
and the five phases theory, which are difficult to reconcile with contemporary biomedical
information but continue to play an important role in the evaluation of patients and the
formulation of treatment in acupuncture. |
Simply stated, this means that if you go to a practitioner who practices traditional
Chinese medicine, you are unlikely to be properly diagnosed. In 1998, following his
lecture at a local college, an experienced TCM practitioner diagnosed me by taking my
pulse and looking at my tongue. He stated that my pulse showed signs of "stress"
and that my tongue indicated I was suffering from "congestion of the blood." A
few minutes later, he examined a woman and told her that her pulse showed premature
ventricular contractions (a disturbance of the heart's rhythm that could be harmless or
significant, depending on whether the individual has underlying heart disease). He
suggested that both of us undergo treatment with acupuncture and herbs -- which would have
cost about $90 per visit. I took the woman's pulse and found that it was completely
normal. I believe that the majority of nonmedical acupuncturists practice in this manner.
The NIH consensus panel should have emphasized the seriousness of this problem.

In the course of your treatment with Traditional
Chinese Medicine, you may be prescribed an herbal supplement. Herbs are a variety of
naturally found products that have medicinal properties that add to the healthful benefits
of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese treatments. Herbal formulas can be taken in a
variety of ways. You may be prescribed raw herbs. You will take them home, and following
simple instructions, steep these herbs into a tea to be drunk at home. Although we call it
"tea," some patients find the taste to be a little less than
"delicious." For this reason, many practitioners also offer herbal supplements
in pill and capsule form. Herbal formulas tend to be created for a single patient and
their specific pattern of disharmony.

How do Chinese Herbs work?
Western science has, in the case of some of the Chinese herbs, been able
to track down the active ingredient that effects the health of the patient. Ephedrine, the
active ingredient in the Chinese herb Ma Huang is an excellent example. However, most
Chinese herbs are unexplored territory from the perspective of Western science.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH), the office of Alternative Medicine (OAM), and
the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are currently wrestling with the best way to regulate Chinese herbal
remedies.
There is, however a great wealth of knowledge about herbs from the
Chinese perspective. The Chinese describe what they understand about herbs as
"energetics."

An example of Energetics
Let's say that you're suffering from arthritis that is aggravated by
humidity or rain. From the Chinese perspective, that would be an invasion of cold and damp
into the acupuncture meridians, or freeways of energy within the body. Sometimes this cold
and damp will lodge in the joints and this is what we, in the Western world, call
Arthritis.
There are, however, certain plants that are very comfortable living in cold and damp
environments. They have a natural defense against excessive cold and damp weather. There
is one in particular that is called Hai Tong Pi. This translates to Sea Vine Bark. There
is, in this bark, the necessary energetics required to keep this plant that lives near the
sea, free from constant invasion of cold and damp air. Ingesting the bark in the form of
tea will provide those who suffer from arthritis the same relief from the pain associated
with an internal invasion of cold and damp as is enjoyed by Hai Tong Pi.
No doubt there is some active ingredient involved in Hai Tong Pi, perhaps erythraline,
or a combination of its known ingredients, but generally, the research on the specifics
has not yet happened. Until then, it is a healthy mental exercise to look at pathology
from the Chinese perspective. Walking away from any problem and coming back fresh to see
it differently is the source of multitudes of creative and beneficial solutions to the
problems of individuals and society. The Chinese perspective on health provides us with
that new way of seeing problems of health, and creative new ways of healing.
Practitioners, or practitioners in training, such as myself, must remember that it is more
important to heal the patient, than be able to explain how it was done.
An excellent source for the known chemical ingredients of Chinese herbs and some
Western research that has been performed with these substances can be found in the book:Chinese
Herbal Medicine: Materia Medica by Dan Bensky and Andrew Gamble. It is published by
Eastland Press, Inc., PO Box 12689, Seattle, Washington 98111 and available through the Acupuncture.com Book

Attention Medical Doctors
Dear Doctor,
Thank you for visiting me here on the Web.
This Web site is about an evolving specialty in the area of natural medicine. I'm going
to present my view of the use of various natural therapies on this Web site.
I would like to invite you to entertain the possibility of using some of these
therapies in your own practice. I can assure you, from having used them myself, that it is
gratifying to be able to offer patients a natural "prescription" that makes them
well (much of the time) without the side effects.
First, in the section Natural Approaches
To Healing Diseases., I give very specific recommendations about nutritional therapies
you can give your patients. Included are recommendations for when you might want to try
intravenous nutrients, which I have found very effective.
You could also consider using Resonance
Balancing/energy healing in your office practice (a nurse or other allied health
professional in your office could learn it, or you could do it yourself). It creates a
deep state of relaxation in even severely stressed people almost all the time. It takes
away many different types of pain, some of which you are trying to help through other
medications that may be having negative side effects. A significant number of people, in
my observation of ten years utilizing this method, receive a profound, long term benefit
of the relief of chronic stress or chronic or acute pain.
I have been further impressed by this technique in that it can be practiced
successfully by almost anyone who wants to. It is based on a mechanical breathing rhythm.
While breathing in this rhythm, the energy coming out of your hands has strong healing
qualities. As a doctor, this can be a handy tool, and I believe it can even be life-saving
in certain circumstances.
One other simple therapy that would probably reduce health care costs and speed healing
in a serious way is the following: Anytime someone has an intravenous drip in the
hospital, put some vitamins and minerals (magnesium is a good start, at least 1 gram a
day) in the IV bag. The sicker they are, the more they need them! Occasionally, rarely,
people are allergic to some component, but otherwise there are almost no negatives to
using these nutrients in this way. Give more patients IV vitamins and minerals in the
office. There is more on intravenous therapies in the section, Natural Approaches
To Healing Diseases.
I will be putting a lot of information on how to practice natural, non-toxic medicine
on this Web Site. I hope you will look at it sincerely, as I am giving it to you. It can
be a boon for you and your patients.
If you use these methods, your practice will attain levels of healing you have not
seen, and which will gratify you and your patients. Quite frankly, I think it could
greatly increase your enjoyment of the practice of medicine.
The best place, from my perspective, to get more in-depth training on the nutritional
approach to medicine is from Jonathon Wright, M.D., and Alan Gaby, M.D.. Their Wright/Gaby
Institute offfers seminars, tapes, and plenty of documentation. For information, write to
the Institute at, PO Box 21535, Baltimore, Maryland, 21208. Their audio tape set,
"Nutritional Therapy In Medical Practice" is outstanding.
If you think of something else I should include as recommendations for illnesses, I'd
be most interested in hearing about them. I'd also love to hear from you if you decide to
try out some of these therapies.
Thanks a lot for dropping by my web site. It is expanding. I hope you'll come again.

What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?
By: Robert Kelly
Traditional Chinese medicine is a natural medicine, an Oriental naturopathy. In
general, it uses safe and non-toxic treatments with no or low iatrogenic impact in an
effort to re-establish balance within the patient and between the patient and their larger
environment. The practioner of Chinese medicine seeks to nudge the body's own homeostatic
mechanisms just enough for the body to right itself. Chinese medicine does not try to
force changes on the bodymind but rather provides the opportunity, the space for the
bodymind to itself instinctively move towards greater health and ease.
Because the professional practioner of traditional Chinese medicine works in concord
with nature and not against it, Chinese medicine, like most natural medicines, works
slower and more smoothly than modern Western medicine. Therefore, the prospective patient
must be willing to give Chinese medicine a chance to do its job at the body's own pace.
One month of healing for each year a chronic condition has persisted is a generous and
realistic time-frame. At first, this may look like the "never never" plan. But,
when viewed from the perspective of a seventy year plus life span, six months, a year, a
year and a half, or even two is actually a short time if real, deep health and balance are
obtained. Having practiced traditional Chinese medicine here in the United States since
1987, it is clear that those patients who stick with Chinese medicine for more than six
months get the best and most profound results. In Chinese medicine, traditionally, a
doctor could not claim a cure until the patient was able to go through four seasons
without a relapse or recurrence. The sweetest music to my ears is when patients tell me
two or three years after having undergone a course of Chinese medical treatment how
consistently better and better they feel once having been pointed in the right direction.
Unfortunately, we live in such a hurry-up world that many contemporary patients find it
difficult to persevere in a single therapy for more than a few weeks or, at most, a couple
of months. There are so many options in the healthcare marketplace, and it is difficult
not to want to do them all, all at once. "If a little is good, more must be
better." But not in Chinese medicine.
Professional Chinese medicine is based on the Doctrine of the Mean, the way of
moderation. When seeking balance, more than enough of anything will tip the balance, and
once that balance has been tipped, the bodymind will tend to swing erratically for some
time. Therefore, it is important to discuss with the professional practioner of Chinese
medicine all therapies one is using or wishes to use to get a focused therapeutic
principle of treatment . The professional practitioner can help the patient decide what
foods, vitamins and minerals, and over the counter medicines are appropriate based on
their individualized Chinese energetic diagnosis. In general, symptomatic shotgun therapy
is best avoided. It rarely results in actual balance.
The treatment plan of deep relaxation, aerobic exercise, diet, herbal medicine, and
acupuncture is a comprehensive and holistic treatment plan which seeks not only to allay
symptoms but also to restore balance at a deep level of one's being. In my experience, the
better the patient's compliance and the more perserving their following of the totall
treatment plan, the better the therapeutic result. Following such a comprehensive
treatment plan takes some determination. It is not without its difficulties. But, not only
will one's condition show marked improvement, the patient's entire health and well-being
will take a turn for the better. As in the story of the turtle and the hare, it is slow
and steady which wins this race. It is little wonder that the turtle is a traditional
Chinese symbol of longevity. home

Onion

The everyday Onion (Allium cepa) is one of
the oldest and most versatile herbal remedies. Long before commercial cold treatments,
herbalists used a syrup made from the juice of one onion, mixed with honey, to alleviate
congestion. This worked as well as today's over-the-counter cough medicines without some
of the unpleasant side effects, like drowsiness or nervousness. Onion is also excellent
for indigestion.
A roasted Onion can be used as a poultice for earaches. Onion is believed to be a
natural source of energy, and some people swear that an Onion a day can prevent hair loss.
Applied directly to the skin, Onion has special healing properties. Salted Onions are
useful for troublesome warts. Onion juice rubbed between the toes 2 to 3 times daily can
cure athlete's foot. A mixture of 1 to 2 teaspoons of Onion juice with 1 teaspoon of
vinegar can fade unsightly liver spots or dark blemishes.
An Onion a day may also keep the cardiologist away. Studies show that people who eat a
medium-sized Onion daily can lower their overall cholesterol and raise their HDL, or
"good" cholesterol. Onion has also been shown to lower blood pressure and help
prevent blood clots. A recent study by the National Cancer Institute showed that people
who eat diets high in allium vegetables such as Onion (and garlic) suffer from less
stomach cancer that those who don't . According to folklore, Onion also helps restore
sexual potency.
For colds, Onion juice can be mixed with 2 teaspoons of honey, or taken as 1 teaspoon
for 3 to 4 times daily. To make Onion juice, puree one raw Onion in a blender or food
processor, and strain through cheesecloth. For external use, rub the juice on warts or
between the toes to fight athlete's foot. The juice can also be used as an antiseptic on
skin wounds.
A word of caution for nursing mothers: if you're breast-feeding an infant, stay clear
of Onions, because they could cause the baby to suffer colic.
Beet Root

Beet Root contains an active substance which exhibits
tumor-inhibiting (cancerous) capabilities. Beet Root also has a general stimulant
and resistance-enhancing action. This is based on the red pigment 'betanin', an anthocyan
from the flavonoid group. Large quantities of Beet Root consumption can make both urine
and stools turn red, which should not be mistaken for blood. And there are numerous
reports that Beet Root is beneficial in cases of effective treatment of malignant tumors.
Cod Liver Oil

Cod Liver Oil is a source of vitamins A and D, and also essential
omega 3 oils. Cod Liver Oil aids the liver, strengthens bones, helps the brain, nervous
system, and production of prostaglandin. In addition, calcium is better assimilated in the
presence of Vitamin D3. Cod Liver Oil also works as a lubricant to alleviate stiffness
& pain in the joints.
Calcium

Calcium is the most abundant mineral element in the body. It
occurs primarily in plants, dairy products, and seafoods. Calcium is necessary for healthy
bones and teeth, for clotting of the blood for the functioning of nerve tissue and muscles
(including the heart), for enzymatic processes, and for controlling the movement of
fluids through cell walls. It also acts to balance the amounts of other minerals and
promotes better use of iron by the body. Calcium dissolves in acid but is not affected by
heat or light.
Among it's many benefits, Calcium builds and maintains bones and teeth, regulates heart
rhythm, eases insomnia, helps regulate the passage of nutrients in & out of the cell
walls, assists in normal blood clotting, helps maintain proper nerve and muscle function,
lowers blood pressure, is important to normal kidney function, and based on current
medical research reduces the incidence of colon cancer, and reduces blood cholesterol
levels. Deficiency symptoms may result in arm & leg muscle spasms, softening of bones,
back and leg cramps, brittle bones, rickets, poor growth, osteoporosis (a
deterioration of the bones), tooth decay and depression.
The following quantitative list presents both plants and plant products containing
significant amounts of this nutrient, in approximate order from highest to lowest content
for a given weight. Plants marked with an asterisk (*) contain significantly more of the
nutrient than do the unmarked plants. Those marked with a double asterisk (**) contain
considerably more than those with a single asterisk. Unless otherwise noted, all items are
fresh and unprocessed. Dried fruits are often included without their fresh equivalents
because the dried versions weigh considerably less and therefore contain more nutrients
than the same weight of fresh fruit.

The Independent (London)
May 26, 1998 Is fish oil the cure for
schizophrenia?
Sufferers around the world say adding the simplest medicine
to their treatment has changed their lives.
By Kendra Inman

ONE day last year Anne logged on to the Internet and as usual went straight to the
schizophrenia forum. What she read there has, she claims, transformed her life and that of
her 40-year-old schizophrenic son. The article described how researchers at the University
of Sheffield believe the key to treating schizophrenia may be found in fish oil.
Anne put her son, who was already taking the schizophrenia drugs Zyprexa and Lithium,
on high doses of fish oil. Since then he has improved daily.
"He has been homebound for years," she told fellow Internet surfers. "He
is now fishing, hitting golf balls in the yard and reading the sports page."
Before long other benefits emerged, she says. A few weeks after taking the oil her
son's doctor was confident enough about his progress to lower the dosage of his other
drugs and, "he is now doing even better".
Anne's experience caused a stir on the schizophrenia web site. Over recent months, a
flurry of e-mails have passed between schizophrenia sufferers and their families about the
benefits of fish oil. If other families experience the same remarkable changes the effect
on the NHS, as well as thousands of sufferers will be dramatic.
Each year the NHS spends pounds 810m on treating Britain's schizophrenics. They are the
third most costly group of patients to the NHS, after learning disability and stroke
victims. Over pounds 32 million is spent on drugs like the anti-psychotics used to control
the most disturbing schizophrenic symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions and voices*.
Now psychiatrist Dr Malcolm Peet and his team at Sheffield believe they have found a
treatment which is easily obtainable and at a fraction of the cost of drug therapies.
So far two studies have shown that patients given high doses of fish oil in addition to
their usual drugs have seen symptoms improve by more than a quarter. In September last
year, the researchers at Sheffield took the investigation a stage further, using several
different formulations of EPA, a type of fish oil, and 75 patients - the research should
be completed by the summer.
Dr Peet is pleased with the results so far but emphasises that the work is at an early
stage. On no account must patients stop taking their medication and rely on fish oil, he
says. "We have no proof to support a sole treatment approach," he says.
One hundred and fifty miles away in Hammersmith Hospital London, one man has watched
with astonishment the remarkable transformation of a 31- year-old schizophrenic after
treatment with EPA - a change all the more remarkable because the patient had never
undergone conventional drug treatment for his condition.
Like Dr Peet, Basant Puri, consultant psychiatrist at Hammersmith hospital, was aware
of studies linking schizophrenia with a depletion of certain fatty acids. But studies were
hindered by the fact that most schizophrenics receive drug treatments of one form or
another. As a result it was hard for researchers to have a clear picture of the effect of
substances like EPA.
"The ideal is to have patients who are drug naive", Dr Puri explains. "I
came across a patient who had refused medication and, after I explained the hypothesis to
him, he was keen to try the fish oil."
Only six weeks into treatment and Dr Puri and his patient were amazed at the
improvements: "I have never seen a patient get better so quickly."
The man had suffered hallucinations and was anxious and withdrawn when he arrived at Dr
Puri's clinic. He had been diagnosed as a schizophrenic three years before but had only
ever taken one tablet of the drug sulpiride - he refused to take any more after
experiencing side-effects.
After a daily dose of EPA, "he is now up and about and trying to pursue an Open
University degree course," Dr Puri says. He is convinced that the man's recovery is
no fluke. The patient's illness had never been episodic and his symptoms had been constant
for two years. Also he had been involved with several research studies and so was unlikely
to have improved as a result of extra attention he got from the team.
Schizophrenia is the most feared and misunderstood mental illness. In the eyes of the
public it turns its 250,000 British sufferers from Dr Jekylls into Mr Hydes, ordinary men
and women into killers. Ill-informed press coverage has demonised sufferers and fuelled
public fears about the condition.
The community care reforms have been condemned for releasing vulnerable and sometimes
volatile or dangerous individuals into the community without proper support. Fragile
support networks have broken down and led to a number of well-publicised tragedies.
In the 1950s, two French doctors discovered the first anti-psychotic drug,
Chlorpromazine, which revolutionised the treatment of severe mental illness and allowed
people to be treated in the community.
In the last 40 years doctors have learned to transplant hearts and make babies in
tubes, but there has been surprisingly little progress in drug therapies during that time,
says Dr Peet.
The first drug was quickly followed by others that act in much the same way, by
blocking messages to receptors in the brain. Even the latest versions produce a range of
distressing and damaging side effects.
While they work to reduce hallucinations and delusions they do nothing for the apathy
and emotional bluntness experienced by patients, says Dr Peet. And large doses can make
these symptoms worse.
New kids on the block, such as Clozapine, produce fewer side effects but have other
problems. Schizophrenics on anti-psychotic drugs can also develop the symptoms associated
with Parkinsons disease and experience stiff muscles, a shuffling walk and limited facial
movements.
About a fifth of patients on long-term treatment develop a condition called tardive
dyskinesia, with sudden involuntary facial or body movements and difficulty swallowing and
walking. Long-term drug treatment exacerbates the condition and there is evidence that
symptoms continue even after drug treatment stops, leaving patients, "effectively
brain damaged".
The fish oil story began five years ago after Dr Peet noticed that a number of studies
found evidence that due to a genetic flaw, schizophrenics' cell membranes lack certain
polyunsaturated fatty acids which affects the development of the brain.
Inspired by this work, Dr Peet's team conducted a pilot study in 1993 of 20 patients.
The results were encouraging.
They indicated that the more polyunsaturated fatty acids a patient consumed the fewer
symptoms they had.
Determined to test the theory further, a year later the Sheffield team conducted a
trial to see if supplementing patients' diets with high doses of fatty acids would repair
the damage and affect the course and outcome of the condition.
In a double blind trial that demands neither side knows what they are administering or
receiving, 45 patients already on anti-psychotics and still exhibiting symptoms took one
of two types of fish oil, EPA or DHA, or a corn oil placebo. The results were startling.
The team found symptoms reduced by a quarter in those who took EPA.
Snake oil, fish oil, what's the difference some asked? Dr Peet admits to having
encountered initial scepticism from psychiatrists but a great deal of interest by
nutritionists.
If fish oil proves to be the key to a new dawn in the treatment of schizophrenia then
Dr Peet will make an unconventional hero. With his shoulder-length grey hair and snappy
suits he is a long way from the lab-coated boffin stereotype.
Dr Peet laughs at the idea that he is a radical. "I am conventional in my clinical
practice, I can assure you," he says.
Based on results so far, people suffering from schizophrenia could do worse than take
concentrated fish oil supplements readily available in pharmacies and health food shops.
While not the pure form used by researchers they do contain large amounts of EPA and
the evidence so far suggests it would be beneficial, he says. With the scientist's
caution, he adds: "Let me put it another way - if I were a schizophrenic I would be
taking it."
If Dr Peet is right then for many, distressing side effects could be a thing of the
past.
The shame is that people suffering from schizophrenia have had to wait over forty years
for something that they could have bought in the local chemist.

Fish Oil and Your Health
by
Paul B. Addis, Ph.D.

Introduction
The discovery that fish oil may have unique benefits in the fight against coronary
heart disease has stimulated a tremendous amount of research which this publication
summarizes. Although the subject is complex, the study of fish oils is very worthwhile
because it provides a totally new perspective on the relationship of diet to coronary
heart disease.
We have been inundated with oversimplified information about the effects of diet on
blood cholesterol. It has led most people to believe that low blood cholesterol achieved
by eating a low cholesterol diet is the one and only key to good health, particularly good
heart health. Because of this, when the health benefits of fish oil were first reported,
most people assumed that its primary benefit is the lowering of blood cholesterol. The
health benefits of fish oil, however, are primarily related to the reduction of platelet
activity, not the reduction of blood cholesterol. While some studies do show that fish oil
moderately reduces blood cholesterol, it has been shown to increase blood cholesterol in
many other studies. While attaining a low blood cholesterol is considered healthy, it is
only one of many factors affecting heart disease which must be considered. This
publication explains more fully the relationship of diet to coronary heart disease and the
health benefits of fish oil.
The Benefits of Fish Oil
Fish oil has many names. One of the most common is omega-3 fatty acid pr its
scientific abbreviation, N-3. N3 fatty acids are found mostly in fish, but are
contained in other foods as well. Fish oil is the best food source of these fatty acids.
The primary benefit of N-3 fish oil is the reduction of platelet activity (blood
clotting) and plaque formation which in turn can prevent heart attacks. Here's how it
works.
Platelets are clot-forming blood cells which prevent excessive bleeding. Overly active
platelets, however, may speed the build-up of plaque, a deposit of fatty or fibrous
material which narrows a blood vessel wall. Elevated blood cholesterol also contributes to
the acceleration of plaque formation. When plaque narrows an artery it is easier for a
blood clot to get stuck in the artery and this can cause a heart attack. Because platelets
also form blood clots, this is likely to occur. That's why it is desirable to reduce
platelet activity and why N-3 fatty acid, fish oil, is beneficial.
Atherosclerosis
Plaque build-up and narrowing of an artery is called atherosclerosis. It is a disease
of aging which begins early in life. The process of this disease is complicated, involving
monocytes (white blood cells), platelets, various tissue cells, low-density
lipoproteins (LDL), as well as cholesterol, as commonly believed, but also fat, smooth
muscle cells, calcium, and other components.
Atherosclerosis starts when the cells which cover the inner surface of a blood vessel
become injured. Monocytes and platelets, both found in plaque, adhere to the injured area
and attempt to repair it. Monocytes encourage the formation of foam cells and platelets
stimulate the movement of smooth muscle cells into the injured area. All of these cells
begin to accumulate in the blood vessel and it becomes progressively more narrow.
Fish oil, N-3 fatty acid, reduces the activity of monocytes and platelets, cell
production, narrowing of the arteries, and production, narrowing of the arteries, and the
chance of blood clots and heart attack. Some research indicates that fish oil reduces the
risk of heart attack even in people how already have extensive atherosclerosis.
Polyunsaturated, Saturated, N-6, and N-3 Fatty Acids
There are more than twenty different types of fatty acids commonly found in food. In
general, all foods contain most of the twenty types of fatty acids to some degree.
Saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids are two types we hear a lot about. As all foods
and oils contain most of the different types of fatty acids to some extent, even
polyunsaturated vegetable and fish oils contain some saturated fat. Fish oil, the most
polyunsaturated of all oils, contains 15% to 30% saturated fat. Thus the terms
polyunsaturated and saturated are inadequate to accurately describe fat or oil.
All polyunsaturated fatty acids are different and so have different health effects. And
all fats, polyunsaturated or saturated, have both health benefits and drawbacks. For
example, vegetable oil, an N-6 polyunsaturated oil, is often promoted for lowering blood
cholesterol and undesirable low-density lipoproteins (LDL). However, it may increase the
chance of heart attack by lowering high-density lipoproteins (HDL) which keep arteries
clean, and by increasing the activity of platelets and monocytes, which is reduced by N-3
oils (von Schacky 1987). Advertisements which promote the health benefits of one oil over
all others are again providing oversimplified information. Every oil has its health
benefits and drawbacks. None is a cure-all. The important N-3 and N-6 fatty acids of foods
are shown in the table below.

How N-3 and N-6 Fatty acids Affect Your Health
N-3 and N-6 fatty acids have negative and positive health effects. N-6 fatty acids
encourages the formation of eicosanoids called prostaglandins and leukotrienes. These are
potent chemicals which can increase platelet and monocyte activity respectively, thus
increasing the risk of heart attack. The good news is that both N-6 and N-3 fatty acids
reduce certain lipoproteins which carry plasma lipids (fatty materials) in the blood
plasma. Plasma lipids consist party of cholesterol and triglycerides. The reduction of
lipoproteins in effect reduces plasma lipids and ultimately helps preven atherosclerosis
and heart disease.
N-6 and N-3 fatty acids compete with each other. Therefore, the amount of N-6 and N-3
fatty acids, the N-6/N-3 ratio, is very important. Americans eat 17 times as much N-6
fatty acid, usually in the form of vegetable oil, as the eat N-3, which is very unhealthy.
Ideally people should eat approximately 5 times as much N-6 fatty acid as N-3 fatty acid,
a 5/1 ratio. The health benefits are an increase in prsotacyclin and a decrease in
thromboxane. Prostacyclin reduces platelet activity (clotting) and prevents heart attacks
by preventing arterial spasms. A decrease in thromboxane is also desirable because it
increases platelet activity and arterial spasms, the opposite effect of prostacyclin.
The N-3 Fatty Acid in Fish
The amount of N-3 oils varies in different types of fish. It is commonly believed that
only salt water fish contain significant levels of N-3 fatty acid. This is not
true. Freshwater fish from cold northern waters, including Lake Superior, can have
significant levels as well (Want et al. 1990).
The following are recommended saltwater and freshwater fish with a high N-3 oil
content:
albacore
black bass
bluefish
carp
channel catfish
herring
lake herring |
lake trout
mackerel
pompano
salmon
tuna (Water-packed)
whitefish |
Fish not recommended are those with low levels of N-3 oils. They are:
cod
flounder
haddock
halibut
grouper |
pike
shark
snapper
sole
walleye
whiting |
For maximum benefits, fish with high N-3 oil content should be prepared
with additional oil by baking, broiling, or grilling. Preparing fish with batter,
breading, or frying reduces health benefits significantly. The result is a less desirable
N-3/N-6 ratio when vegetable oil (N-6) is added during preparation.
Fish oils, like any food, have disadvantages as well as benefits. Because fish oils are
highly polyunsaturated they become rancid quickly. Although this usually has no effect on
the nutritional value, eating rancid fish is obviously not a good idea. Because rancid
fish smell fishy, they are not very appetizing. Proper storage and short storage periods
can alleviate the problem of rancidity.
Alternative sources of N-3 Fatty acids
There are other sources of N-3 fatty acids such as fish oil capsules, canola oil, and
flax oil. Use of fish oil capsules should be done only with the recommendation of your
doctor, who should also specify the brand. Canola and flax oils have less potent forms of
N-3 fatty acids and would need to be eaten in approximately 20 times the amount to get
comparable benefits of consuming fish oil rich in N-3 fatty acids.
Dietary Recommendations
It is best to eat a variety of oils in moderate quantities given the wide range of
effects of different oils. In general, you should eat more N-3 fatty acids and less N-6
vegetable oil to attain a more balanced N-3 /N-6 ratio. Recent studies suggest that eating
0.5 to 1 gram of fish oil daily reduces the risk of heart disease death in middle-aged
American men by 40 percent. The most efficient way to add these important oils to your
diet is to eat two meals per week of fish rich in N-3 fatty acids prepared without
additional oil.
